View Full Version : Help! They've Hijacked my home page.
The rotten bastards have hijacked my ome page and no matter what I do I can not retrieve the missing page. What can I do? I'm working with a Dell Pc with Microsoft Windows XP Home edition.
Hi Clemmo. Not to panic :) Read this (http://majorgeeks.com/vb/showthread.php?t=27385) by MajorAttitude and this (http://www.majorgeeks.com/vb/showthread.php?t=26149) also. You will find a lot of answers there.
thanks for the advice but whatever is in my computer it is preventing me from downloading the software. it keeps redirecting me to some search page.
You can download HijackThis here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html).
If you'd like you can post the log here and we can take a look at it for you. But definitely scan with Ad-aware first to clean things up a bit. SpywareBlaster (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2859.html) is also a great tool you can use to prevent some of those nasties from being installed in the first place.

Yes, the main problem here is the nkvd.us hijacker, which CWShredder (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html) should remove.
Sharp eye, Max :)
clem, I'm emailing you CWShredder, after you run it, post another log here.
Man, guys. That nkvd sucker got everywhere didn't it? Shredder should take care of it though :)
clem, the following stuff has to go too. In HijackThis put a check on these lines and click 'Fix Checked', then go into Control Panel > Add/Remove and uninstall 'MyWebSearch' (the actual name may be a little different). You should be fixed up after this. Let us know.

Hey guys,
Many thanks for your efforts. I truly appreciate them. And Alan, hats off to you especially for you supportive emails. Unfortunately, the bugger is still with me. I never received the email containing the CWShredder and this beast is preventing me from downloading it.
This is on tough bastard. But I refuse to give up.

Sent you CWShredder again, attempt #2
Hey guys,

Clem, you can also go into the registry and delete by hand the lines that HiJack This has flagged. This my help you to get past total inability to download. You should do a registry backup first just to be on the safe side. If you are not familiar with how to edit the registry just drop a message here and anyone who has been helping you thus far can also help with the procedure of using "regedit".
In case you can’t get the CWShredder to install for some reason, here’s what to do. (Please note that some of these files have already been mentioned by AlanC, but I didn’t want to cause confusion by omitting them here).
Right now you have HijackThis in a temporary folder. It needs to be in an individual permanent folder so that it can create its own back-ups in the event you need to restore something. Please create a folder, such as C:\HJT\ and move HijackThis to that folder.
Next, close ALL windows. Run HijackThis and place a check mark next to the following items and then select “Fix checked.”

Next, restart your computer in SAFE MODE and search for and delete the following items.
(You will have to change your settings to show all hidden files and folders to find everything you need to delete).
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\ < delete folder
NOTE: The following file will have to be renamed before it can be deleted: mtwirl32.dll
Reboot your computer into normal mode.
At this point you should be able to download and use CWShredder to make sure nothing has been missed. Then, reboot and rescan with HijackThis and post your new log here for review.
Please make sure your system is protected by going to the Windows Update site and downloading and installing all critical updates/patches.
To help prevent re-infestation, I suggest you also download and install SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard, both of which I believe are available here at Major Geeks. Also, make sure you have both Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy installed. Update them and run them at least once a week.
How did you get infected in the first place? Read this article…….

That may well be. However, when the moderators at boards like SpywareInfo, TomCoyote, Net-Integration, Wilders Security, Computer Cops, etc., all recommend its removal, I have a tendency to respect their collective opinions.
SmileyCentral is not smiled upon in anti-adware/anti-spyware circles.
